Präfixe von Marineschiffen

Ein Schiffspräfix ist eine Kombination von Buchstaben, normalerweise eine Abkürzungen, die vor dem Namen eines zivilen oder militärischen Schiffes verwendet werden.

Als Präfixe für Zivilschiffe können auch die Art des Antriebs, wie 'SS' für Dampfschiff, oder der Zweck, wie 'WM' für Forschungsschiff, verwendet werden. Zivilpräfixe werden oft inkonsistent und häufig überhaupt nicht verwendet. Manchmal wird ein Strich verwendet, wie in 'M/S', um die Buchstaben zu trennen.

Bei militärischen Präfixen werden oft Abkürzungen für längere Titel verwendet, wie zum Beispiel das 'H.M.S' und später 'HMS' (His/Her Majesty's Ship = Schiff seiner/ihrer Majestät) in den königlichen Marine. Früher schlossen Präfixe oft die Art des Schiffs ein. Als Beispiel sei hier das 'US-F' (United States Frigate) genannt, was für Fregatten der Marine der Vereinigten Staaten stand. Heute ist die gängige Praxis, ein einzelnes Präfix für alle Kriegsschiffe der Marine einer Nation, den Unterstützungsschiffen und Schiffen von verbündeten Diensten (z. B. Küstenwache) zu verwenden.

Vom 20. Jahrhundert an, werden die militärischen Schiffe anhand von Hull-Nummern identifiziert, die auf die Seiten der Schiffe gemalt werden. Jede Marine hat ihr eigenes System. Die Marine der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika benutzen Hull Klassifizierungssymbole und Marinen aus Europa sowie aus den Commonwealth Staaten, verwenden Hull Nummern.
